Learning environment

A Collaborative learning environment is where learning occurs. Learning environment refers to students working together as a group, finding solutions to the activity, connecting to their understanding, creating ideas, building new relationship, collection and respecting knowledge. (Lin, Mills & Ifenthaler, 2016) Collaborative learning is defined as an instructional method that allows pairs or small groups of students to work together towards a common goal; it has been advocated as having the potential to enhance active exchange, critical thinking, and achievement.

How does the learning environment facilitate cognitive presence?

The facilitator can be the one that has comprehensive and knowledge in a particular area. When it comes to cognitive presence, it is essential for the learner to construct the meaning with their own metacognition. The learner can connect their knowledge with the new knowledge, once the connection is made. Students with the understanding of the material are able to retain the information and apply it to their learning. The facilitator can help with cognitive in the learning environment by designing an environment where students can work together, create activities and establish connections with prior knowledge, challenging students and making a community of learners.(Lin,2008) Collaborative inquiry helps learners not only teach themselves, but also teach, challenge, and co-create knowledge with their peers.

How does the learning environment facilitate teacher presence?

The instruction method begins with the framework of her course. The educator is there to model respectful behavior and make pedagogical option for her lesson content and activities. The facilitator is there to help and guide students and correct them if the student is mis-interpreting their learning. Working with students as a team helps creates ideas and discussion to reach the desire outcome. (Lin, 2008) A good facilitator helps reflect and re-phrase the participants’ thoughts and helps set the appropriate dwell time to pace the conversation so as not to leave a point before it has been appropriately investigated, as well as not to dwell on the unimportant or trivial. It is very important for the educator to provide motivation for students to build an online learning community

How does the learning environment facilitate social presence?

The learning environment of social presence is important for students. This type of learning environment is crucial for the educators to build a strong foundation of commutation. When the teacher is facilitating social presence, it creates a community of learning environments. Social presence and it is done by common interest, sharing ideas, finding solutions collaboration with each other. Social learning can also occur within online learning with social networking. Software programs have made it possible for collaboration between teachers, students and peers during online learning. Social presence is a two-way interaction and some of the ways you can achieve this is by sharing experiences, feedback and conversation which is require in this 21st century to achieve their education. (Lin, Mills & Ifenthaler, 2016) There is a relationship between multitasking, collaboration, and problem-solving performance; and collaboration is positively related to the overall problem-solving performance.

What do you like about the learning environment?

What I like about the collaborative learning is that everyone works with one another with respect. When everyone is able to work with one another with respect it will help the student’s capability to learn. This is because the learner will have the confidence to share questions, which will help with their understanding of a lesson. (Lin, 2008) Collaborative inquiry is highlighted by the active interplay between the participants, the influx and outflow of thoughts and ideas where the participants were seeking each other’s respect, understanding, knowledge, critical thinking, and concurrence.

How could the learning environment improve?

The learning environment could be improved in many ways. A teacher could include more hands-on learning or possibly add more posters to the interior of the room. From my point of view, I think there should be more communication between the students and teachers. If there is hardly any communication, it could interfere with a student’s learning ability. If there is a stronger communication bond between students and their teachers, then students wouldn’t be afraid to ask questions or for more help. Without the students asking questions, how would teachers truly know that the student understood the lesson. There are many more ways the learning environment could be improved, but it all begins with the communication that teachers need to have with their students. (Lin, 2008) With greater understanding and knowledge of the true nature of communication and learning, and of the conditions needed to help support learners’ capacities for self-directed and collaborative learning, we will find that learners can accomplish more, achieve more potentials, and enjoy more rights to education.
